    Our View

    Unfiltered expert opinion

"The J7+ is the replacement of the i7+, likely New Zealand’s best-selling robot vacuum ever. It’s taken a while, so there’s quite a lot new… and a lot of expectation, too.

We love the design, with its textured metal and embossed iRobot logo. The base is also hugely improved – it’s far smaller than anything else on the market but still fits up to a months’ debris.

Most importantly though, it’s the first Roomba with object detection to see things on the floor. It is particularly good at recognising pet waste on the floor to avoid any robot vacuum owner’s worst nightmare.

Overall, it’s the most accomplished Roomba so far, and is likely the best robot vacuum for large homes that are predominantly carpeted."

    Thoughts.

I often think that iRobot are like the Apple of robot vacuums. Their product looks great, does the fundamentals exceptionally well, while being very simple to use. Simplicity usually comes at the expense of advanced customisation, but not many people mind, which is why their product remains the most popular option on the market.

The J7+ is the most advanced Roomba yet, with a new front-mounted camera system, and a lot of software improvements. Despite this, there were no huge surprises for me when testing the J7+. It is the natural successor to the i7, and it is probably the best deep-cleaning robot on carpets.

    What we loved.

The carpet cleaning performance remains second to none, thanks to iRobot’s patented dual roller brushes. This makes it particularly good on pet hair and very little gets tangled around the brush.

The object detection camera is good and has an LED, so it still works in the dark. It was very effective at avoiding items that it might get stuck on, and recognised pet waste successfully in all of our tests.

The design is significantly improved from all other i Series Roombas. It isn’t the most important thing but it makes it even cooler to watch in action.

The auto-empty base is very effective. It also has a dust-bin full sensor (again, unique to iRobot thanks to a patent). This means that the robot won’t continue to clean when it’s full which causes a number of issues. The design is small, classy, and is likely a sign of where other brands will go too.

It has a dirt-detect sensor. When it goes through a particularly dirty patch, it realises that the dust-bin is filling more quickly and it will repeat that area.

There is increased app functionality, with the ability to send the robot to specific rooms, or even specific sections of each room. The virtual barriers are slightly less essential due to the improved navigation, however I still wouldn’t want a robot without them.
    Things to consider.

While the J7 is exceptional at deep-cleaning, the actual suction rating isn’t that high (counter-intuitive, I know), so it isn’t quite as good at picking up large items such as leaves or bark.

The robot will cover everywhere, however moves a little less smoothly than a LiDAR robot, particularly while creating its map. It doesn’t make much material difference to the cleaning performance.

You will need to connect the robot to the iRobot app to have much control, as there is only one physical button (start/stop cleaning).
    Who should use this robot.

This is an ideal robot for people who are mostly concerned with deep-cleaning performance on carpet. It’s the best option at removing pet-hair from a deep-pile and not much gets tangled around the roller brushes. The object detection is particularly useful for people with a bit of clutter or kids.

It has an improved 100minute battery run-time and can save up to 10 floor-plans. As a result, we recommend it for large multi-level homes.

This is an estimate to help you choose which robots to consider. The max cleaning area is more accurate if you know the size of your home.

Up to approx. 3 to 4 bedrooms

This is the maximum size home the robot can clean.  This will be affected if you have a lot of furniture or particularly deep-pile carpet.

    Max cleaning area 250 m²

Self-mapping robots save a floor-plan of your home to allow you to add no-go lines and room-select (if available).  Some robots only support single-level homes (1 floor-plan), while others allow you to save multiple.

    Multi-level homes

Some robots can automatically empty themselves into their base.  Most auto-empty stations hold 30 full cleans.

A vacuum always needs a filter. It does not filter what is picked up, it filters out what escapes back into the room.  It is particularly important for people with allergies or respiratory concerns.

High-efficiency is typically 99% of allergens down to 10μm, while a HEPA filter is 99.97% of allergens down to 0.3μm.

    High Efficiency Filters

This is one of the most important specs for any robot as it is the main factor in how smart it is.

    Navigation: vSLAM Camera

Watch the navigation test video on this page to see how efficiently it maps a room!

    Methodical and accurate navigation

Some robots have secondary navigation looking at the floor to help it avoid objects that may jam the vacuum.  These are typically 3D lasers or cameras with object recognition.

Note: most robots will run without connecting to a smart-phone, however many require an app to access all the features.

Connects to your phone via an app

    "Hey Robomate, clean my home!"

Some robots are smart-home compatible and can be voice controlled.

Schedule cleans to suit your schedule.  For example, schedule your robot to start at 8:30 every morning while you're dropping the kids off to school.

No-go zones are virtual barriers.  They're normally very easy to set-up by drawing lines on the map your robot automatically creates on your smart-phone.  This is very useful if there are any unusually tricky spots in the house.

No-Go Zones - tell the robot to avoid specific areas

With room select, the robot will clean the selected area(s) and return home without trying to clean the rest of the house.  Traditionally robots will clean everywhere they can access, however some premium robot vacuums have the ability to schedule specific rooms.

Room select - specify which rooms to clean

All our robots will recharge automatically, however some will remember where they left off and resume cleaning if they didn't finish the job.

    Automatically recharge and resume

Some robots can also do mopping.  In some cases this can affect vacuuming performance so watch our full review if this is important for you.

    Vacuum and Mopping

No mop zones let you tell the robot what is carpet and what is hard-floor.  Robot mops without this capability will require quite a lot of set-up to be effective.

D-shaped robots can clean a lot more effectively close to walls than circle robots.

Circle robots can navigate a lot more easily in tight spaces as they can rotate on the spot.
